Blog 4 Portfolio.

CROSSOVER
designed by Cara Griffith.
Published by the Papakura Art Gallery
27 July - 31 August 2013

The design of this book is in a similar style to the one from blog 3. All the works are in full bleed, and all the writing is in columns to the left of each page. I like the way that the spaces of nothing actually add to the design, almost like a comma is to writing. The way the word crossover in the quote on the cover in red adds a subtle highlight to it, but its not glaring which is nice. The way that the back and front cover are all one image also make it look cleaner, although the quote on the front is mirrored onto the back which makes it feel more complete when you get to the end of the booklet. I really like this design.

Catalogue

FROM THE I-LAND
25 August - 6 October 2012
Designed by Nell may.
a5 booklet, 16 pages.

This book has a very simple clean cut design. The front cover is a full bleed of a photo with text at the top in white, which is barely readable. Where their is writing inside the catalogue is in to the side, only half the page give or take. The book consists of several artists works, as it was created for a show at the Papakura Art Gallery. I particularly like the layout of page 6 and seven, The title of the artist and work is in the left hand column and the statement/writing is in the right hand column with a photograph to full bleed on page 7. I like the way it flows together fluidly, and the colour palette is calming.

Time space and motion week 5

C O L O U R

Explosion, Roy Lichtenstein. 248.9 x 170.2cm. Steel.

Roy Lichtenstein uses bright primary colours to draw the eye in and demand attention. Lichtenstein restricts his colour palette to only primary colours and black and white,  but in this particular work he only uses red yellow white and black, and the combination is bold in comparison to some artists work that only use neutral, or "plain" colours, this give Lichtenstein's work a different vibe and it stands out of the rest.

Instead of using different shades or tones of the colours, he uses dots to trick the eye at a distance into thinking that for example, the red is in-fact lighter where as its actually not its just using white space to make it appear lighter. Lichtenstein also uses flat planes of colour and this creates a very bold bright effect as opposed to the dotted areas.

Time space and motion week 4

Marilyn Diptych.
Andy Warhol, 205.44 cm x 289.56 cm. Acrylic on canvas 1962.

This work show uses repetition very boldly and also each repeated work shows slight variation, as the have been painted by hand and not printed which is different than warhols other works but the style is still distinctively warhol. Warhol has explored repetition in this work by recreating the same image 50 times in colour on one half of the diptych, and in black and white on the other half. By repeating this same image the eye is drawn to the slight differences although they are also slight, this gives is a hand made effect.

Time space and motion week 3.

Drawingmachine by Eske Rex. From Core77, Length: 3:03

The video opens to a wide shot of the machine and it barely moves, this shot takes up around 6 seconds. It then goes on to various shots lasting 4-6 seconds showing the machine gaining momentum and speed, the audio is only the sounds the machine creates. I particularly liked the close up shots of the pen moving around the page. The video comes to an end after the machine calms down and the last shot is a shot of on of the pendulums slowly stopping movement, this shot lasts for around four seconds.

The video is just showing the drawing machine at work, it has a calm feel to it and barely any audio, although the audio is does have is necessary for the video to feel the same. I found that some of the shots lasted for just a tiny bit too long and it could become boring and methodic to some.

Time Space and Motion Week 2

O2 "Be more Dog" From Keith Schofield. Length: 0.59 seconds.

1. Close up of cats face, 2 seconds.
2. Mid shot of cat on couch, 2 seconds.
3. Mid shot cat on ground with vacuuming, 2 seconds.
4. Mid shot cat on window sill, 2 seconds.
5. Mid shot of cat on bench, 2 seconds.
6. Same as shot 5 only a different angle, 1-2 seconds.
7. Girl playing with cat, Mid shot, 2 seconds.
8. Cat looks up with realisation, mid/close up 2 seconds.
9. Cat walking to the cat door, Wide shot, 1-2 seconds.
10. Cat door Cut in 2 seconds.
11. Cat running 2-3 seconds. wide shot
12. Cat going through cat door, wide shot 2 seconds
13. Cat landing close up 2 seconds.

The video goes on with a similar pattern of shots like this, but with more wide shots also.

The video begins with a cat going through its normal "boring" everyday life, when it realises, why not be more dog? the video goes on with the cat becoming more dog like, playing like a dog, with dogs etc. he Video closes with the narrator saying "maybe we should all be a bit more dog."

Portraiture Painting PTTX

Chuck Close

I like this painting because its not like your normal painting it seems distorted up close, and you wouldn't know it was a portrait until you stepped back a bit and took it all in. It's amazing how good this art is and I really really like it.

Peter stitchbury.

Peter stitchburys paintings are really unique and are almost like caricatures. I like how even those features and sharped and exaggerated the painting still looks really polished and realist, they are still recognisable as the reference.

THE PROCESS.

The process to creating a portrait is very long winded. First of all we made our canvases. This involved creating a frame using the equipment in the wood work room. Then we stretched our canvas over the frame using brute strength and a staple gun. We primed and prepped our canvases so that they were ready for paint. We got our photos taken by caroline and we cut and cropped them using photoshop and printed them out. We started off just by mixing skin tones and getting accustomed to the oils. I really can't decide whether or not I like paint with oils or not. Then we started underpainting after drawing and scaling up our canvases.

MY EXPERIENCE.

I didn't really enjoy oil painting, it takes so long and I get impatient easily. My portrait of Kayla could have been alot better but I'm happy with the result for a first time painting with oils. I wouldn't paint the background in oil paint next time that added days onto the time this painting took. Beside all of that Kayla is happy with the result and I think I did well for a first try and portraiture and oil painting. The most important thing about painting with oils that I have learnt is not to rush because you cannot speed up the time it takes to dry you just have to work with it.

New Zealand painting PPTX

"Boy am I scared eh!" Peter Robinson.

I really like this painting, I like the font he uses because it reminds me of "where the wild things are" which is a book/movie that I love. I also enjoy the earthy tones he uses and how the text jumps out at you being the only part of the painting in a light colour. I chose this painting to create a response to, I wrote "Why are you scared?" because the artist never reveals why he is scared. I like the swirl to the right corner of the painting, it reminds me of a finger print of some kind.
Chris Heaphy.

This painting is so beautiful. I love the way the black and white brings out the rainbow colours used and creates a skull image out of random objects/silhouettes. I like how intricate it is, and how it looks like a mosaic of things, its almost hard to believe this is a painting!

AFTER~
Painting after is a term used to describe an artists painted response to another artists work. When you paint after you are painting a painting either in reply or acknowledgement to the artists painting you are responding to.

MY AFTER~
My after painting was in response to Peter Robinson's "boy am I scared eh!". I tried to mimic his style and created a background similar to his in his painting. I then mimicked the font and wrote "Why are you scared?" in reply to his painting. I like how my painting turned and and I am happy with the outcome considering the time frame I had to create it.

Abstraction- Creating a work that is not something of reality or is something taken out of reality and is distorted.

Figurative~ Representing by a figure, symbolism.

Manipulating the image week seven.

This week we finally started printing! Printing is tricky at first, because if you pull to light or too hard it comes out all strange, and a couple of times I worked to slow and the tacky ink ripped my paper. Its awkward to work one something at first when it continues to mess up on you, but I got there in the end. Now I really like printing, although I did put a bit too much emulsion on my screen when I was coating it for my second layer, but thats was okay because now I know next time to use more pressure when coating. I also found that sometimes your mistakes turn out really interesting when they are mis-registered, like some of my prints. On a couple of my prints I even made them a little off deliberately. I'm really proud of how they turned out. Overall this week has been fun and a big learning experience for me.

Week 6 manipulating the image.

We started preparing for screen printing this week on monday which it really exciting and I think I'll enjoy screen printing. We prepared our screen with emulsion, and put our designs on them, the water blaster is fun to use. It was really cool to learn the basics of screen printing, and finally using photoshop and kind of enjoying it. My design is simple but I think its good, it should look good printed, especially with black on the brown paper, it'll look really organic. I also painted up so brown paper with pastel colours to make an interesting background to print on, but my paint made the paper too wrinkly so I'm not going to use it. Lesson learned: don't make your paint too watery! On tuesday Emma was absent so I attempted to make more painted backgrounds but they didn't work out very well either, oh well. Maybe I'll try again before I print next week. I was disappointed that we couldn't print on tuesday because I was really excited to but thats alright there is always next week.

Week five manipulating the image.

This week I was absent on the monday so I squashed the work from this week into one day. This week we had to design our own magazine covers. I couldn't find any ideas and I despise photoshop, so I chose to do a zombie themed/ apocalypse themed magazine by hand. It was actually simple to make, it just took awhile to come up with phrases for it like "Top Ten Tips to zombie proof your home!" etc. also the name took a long time to come up with and I'm not overall happy with the title but its better than nothing but I do wish I had thought of something better. Then at the end of the day we looked at the festival "Grounded" that it happening in June here at MIT. It's a festival of sustainable arts, and we learnt about sustainability in art and artists that create sustainable art or use sustainable products and media to create their art. I honestly thought this would be lame hippies and weird stuff like that but it actually was amazing, I really liked Andy Goldsworthy's work, it was really unique and intricate. We also watched the BCA1's runway challenge, it was epic what the could make in only a day, and cool to see what we'd be doing if we continued next year.

Week 3, manipulating the image.

This week we started off by listing adjectives to describe our art better in our blogs. I already knew about adjectives from school, but often I am too lazy to use them. Now that we have a whole list of them with easy access to thesauruses online, hopefully I will use them more often! After this week looked at graphic posters, and graphic artists like Francis Pesamino. I really liked his work, and I like working with words and I enjoy the way words look when made into an image. I decided for a poster I would make a unicorn (who doesn't love unicorns?) with words the describe it on the inside. I really liked doing this, it did take awhile but the result was worth it and I think I like working in that style. On tuesday we looked at an article about hand painted movie posters. These were kind of creepy although they look really well painted. We also did an activity on words an their meanings, which was kind of boring but I think it helped. In the afternoon we continued our posters from the day before and finished them off.

Week 2 Manipulating the image.

This week we started off with mono printing, I've never done mono printing before so this was interesting and to be honest by the end of it I didn't really like it that much, because only sometimes it even turns out very good. We started designing our mono prints by choosing a phrase or word like we did last week, and writing it out making it look 3d, or writing in cursive etc. This wasn't anything new for me but it was fun, I like the drawing side of it. After photocopying our designs we then started to mono-print. Mixing the inks to get light shade or different mixes of colours was annoying because it often came out blotchy looking and so you had to roll it out and then roll that onto a different plate to make it even, at least I worked that out eventually. I got some alright looking mono prints out of it, but overall I'm not too happy with them, they didn't turn out as I really wanted them too.

On tuesday we started making posters using mono print collage and drawing or painting. I chose the phrase "Stop Animal Cruelty!!" as my first poster. This I did enjoy making because it involved text and drawing and I only mono printed the background so that was ok. The end result was a alright poster, the drawing of the giraffe is a bit rushed but it got the point across, but I like how the words stand out. The second poster I made says "Say NO to animal abuse!" and has a sad sad sad cat saying the words, I really like how the cat turned out it really did look sad and didn't take too long to draw either. I guess sometimes some things just work out nicely anyway. I also really like the mono printed background in this one, it turned out really nice, less blotchy than the previous one and not too overpowering.

Overall this week was good and I am looking forward to next week.

Manipulating the image week one

This week was our first week of manipulating the image, also we got our marks back for drawing with nature and learning success which I'm very please with. We started off by taking notes on posters and starting on using words as images, playing with text using overlapping and different techniques using negative space and continuous line drawing etc etc. I think my favorite was my continuous line drawing because I didn't spend very long on it, and it was messy but it was a good kind of messy and it looked really interesting in my opinion.

After that we took our images and edited them on photoshop (I don't think I'm very good at this, but I tried.) and applied text over the top. I think my turned out okay even though I'm not the best and photoshop having not learnt all the in's and outs of it yet, I think it went well for a newbie. Then the next day we used magazines and cut out images in the shape of letter/text to create a collage of text. I really enjoyed this because it wasn't as difficult as photoshop and was colorful! I think I realized eventually that often too much colour is overwhelming and distracting, depending on the look you are going for, so I think in saying that my favorite of that session is the last one were I used black and white but with a pop of colour in there, simple but effective.

A Short History of Painting PPTX

Today we watched a power point on the history of painting to find artist's and their work we would like to make a forgery of.

I liked in particular Rene Magritte's work ceci n'est pas une pipe (this is not a pipe) because of the humour of it, because yes it is a picture of a pipe, but not an actual pipe itself.
I think the artist is trying to say that a painting is only a picture of something, but it is not the actual thing, it is only a picture even though you could still say that it is a pipe, its almost like a paradox. This work was created by Magritte during the surrealist movement and is a icon for modern art because it is so well known, his use of text ing his paintings inspired other artists later in the pop art movement. During the time this work was made the countries involved in WW1 were recovering after the war had stopped ten years previously.

Another work I liked was Roy Lichtenstein's Blam.
This work stood out to me because of its bold colours and because of its comic book or graphic novel style. Lichtenstein used comic books as subject matter and made small thumbnail sized images into big works of art, these were his contribution to the pop art movement. The pop art movement was during the 1960's this movement during a time when mass production was a new thing and the artists involved wanted to have art that was using popular subject matter and easily reproduced art hence the name pop art.

Week Seven

My individual project is going well, I am making a lot of progress on it but I am finding it hard to keep the pace up. I've started using full colour pencil which I think is a good development in my series. The bird in my four is a kakapo which I chose for the colors because they are so pretty, the fifth is an eagle/hawk that I chose because its eye is so striking. Apart from the drawings taking time, I think they are coming out well and I only have one left to start apart from needing to finish some of them.

Week six

I am still working on my individual project and its going really good, although I have found some of the earlier drawings I have made I don't like as much as some of the others and I might end up re-doing them. Otherwise the project is going well and I am starting on my third drawing in the series. I included some picture here of the almost completed/fully completed works.

Week 5

Learning Success

This week we started making news paper sculptures by rolling up newspaper into tubes. I made a sunflower, or at least it was going to be a sunflower but I changed it up later to make it more interesting. It was fun making the sculptures, but it was also hard because you couldn't always get the newspaper to bend how you like it, or roll them all to the same size. In the end it helped to just go with everything being irregular and try not to be too perfectionist, because it turned out looking pretty good anyway. Me and Mikayla decided to combine our sculptures because we thought when they were together they looked better and more interesting.

Drawing from Nature

This week in drawing from nature we started our individual projects. I decided to use animals and flowers in a series if drawings. I started off using graphite pencils only but eventually included colour pencils, and water colour pencils. I'm really excited to continue working on this project.
